CAAC: Chengdu at forefront of midwest aviation development

CAAC deputy chief Xia Xinghua stated Chengdu is at the forefront of China's civil aviation development in the Midwest region, as reported by Sichuan Daily. At the end of 2011, Chengdu Airport was ranked fifth largest airport in China and among the world's top 50 airports with 29.1 million passengers and 477,700 tonnes of cargo. The airport is targeting to become a top 40 global airport with 45.0 million passengers by 2015 and a top 25 airport with 70.0 million passengers by 2020. In terms of cargo traffic, the airport is aiming to handle 860,000 tonnes of cargo by 2015, for a ranking among the top 30 global airports and 1.4 million tonnes of cargo by 2020 for a ranking among the top 25 global airports.
