Boeing offers American Airlines re-engined B737NG: reports

Boeing reportedly offered American Airlines a re-engined B737NG, as part of efforts to sway the US carrier to order Boeing aircraft (Wall Street Journal/Reuters/Bloomberg, 19-Jul-2011). The offer has reportedly been made to counter deals proposed by Airbus. If the offer is accepted, American Airlines would reportedly become the launch customer for the re-developed narrowbody. Boeing and Airbus are competing for a narrowbody order from American Airlines, which could be for as many as 280 aircraft, replacing the carrier's fleet of MD-80s. Airbus has already had considerable sales success with its A320neo, with orders and commitments for 1029 aircraft. American Airlines is reportedly likely to split the order between the manufacturers. An announcement is expected later this week.
