Alitalia to cut up to 700 jobs: reports

Alitalia reportedly reached an agreement with unions on 04-Mar-2011 to eliminate up to 700 jobs on a voluntary basis (AFP, 05-Mar-2011). Labour Minister Maurizio Sacconi said the state was ready to "hand over very generous severance packages" to those who voluntarily resign. "We're satisfied, we managed to get the balance right between a duty to safeguard work and the necessity to achieve greater efficiency and the cost-cutting that comes with it," said Francesco Alfonsi from the UGL union. Alitalia employs about 14,000 people.
