AEA member airlines to offer 10m additional seats in summer 2014

Association of European Airlines (AEA) stated (07-Apr-2014) member airlines will offer an additional 5.5 million seats on intra-European services during the summer 2014 season, and an additional 4.5 million seats on intercontinental services. The largest expansion areas are Eastern Europe and Central/South America. AEA airlines will operate 2.2 million scheduled frequencies in summer 2014, an increase of 1.4% on summer 2013. AEA research manager Sue Lockey said: "The summer 2014 developments are indicative of a further recovery of the industry. Many airlines have done their homework and are, after several seasons of consolidation and rationalisation of networks, once again adding capacity." AEA CEO Athar Husain Khan added: "Europe's connectivity is further improving thanks to the efforts of our airlines. Market conditions remain however challenging. AEA airlines are still confronted with unnecessary regulatory burdens or infrastructure issues that weaken their international competiveness. With the EU elections around the corner we will now soon reach a momentum to create a European aviation policy that secures a sustainable aviation industry." [more - original PR]
