Loganair, Scotland's airline, today announced the appointment of Stewart Adams as its new chief executive.

Adams, a former managing director of Aberdeen-based BMI Regional, joins from Tiger Airways of Singapore, where he has been in charge for the last two years.

Previous chief executive David Harrison becomes executive chairman, succeeding former chairman Scott Grier, who announced his retirement in September 2012 after 36 years service. Grier is now the company's president, with an advisory role.

Chief operating officer Phil Preston, who arrived from Calmac Ferries in May 2012, joins Harrison and Adams on the Loganair board.

Today's moves follow the sale of Loganair last September by Grier to brothers Stephen and Peter Bond, who also acquired BMI Regional in May 2012.

David Harrison said: "Stewart Adams brings 35 years of knowledge and experience in the aviation industry to our company. I am confident that under his leadership Loganair will continue to make progress, and I look forward to working with him to drive the business forward at a time of growth and expansion. With his appointment and the bringing on to the board of Phil Preston, we have a very strong team in place to lead a new era for Loganair."

Stewart Adams said: "Loganair is a fantastic company which prides itself on offering a quality, customer-focused service to the Highlands and Islands, and now to many other parts of the UK and beyond. I know all about it and its markets from my time in Aberdeen with BMI Regional. This is an exciting and challenging time for the business. Loganair has a strong heritage and a loyal customer base and, as chief executive, I hope to build on this going forward."

Loganair, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, operates a fleet of 26 aircraft on a total of 35 routes.

Loganair's core business remains scheduled passenger services, carrying some 600,000 passengers annually on a network which, in addition to lifeline services to its Highlands and Islands heartland, has recently added services from Donegal to Dublin and Glasgow, Glasgow to Leeds and Norwich to Manchester - with a Norwich to Den Helder in Holland service due to start in March 2013.

In addition to scheduled passenger services, freight services for Royal Mail and charter services for the North Sea oil and gas industry continue to make valuable contributions for the company.
