18-Oct-2012 'Feel the warmth' - Gambia Bird, the new West African airline is launched to deliver scheduled services across the region

On Monday 22nd October, Gambia Bird, the new airline and national carrier which is supported by the Germania Group, a German airline with 26 years' experience in the aviation industry throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, commences flying scheduled services across West Africa and into Europe. Operating modern A319 aircraft, the airline is combining the renowned warmth and friendliness of the Gambian culture with world class efficiency, stability and technical support.

The provision of a safe, reliable and scheduled service across all major cities in the region is pioneering a new era in air travel for business people, tourists, and domestic traffic. It is anticipated that the pent-up demand for seats from corporations and private individuals seeking punctuality and an exceptional flying experience will quickly fill seats in Premium and Economy Class.

From Monday 22nd October, Gambia Bird's schedule will commence with flights to Accra, Monrovia, Dakar, Freetown, Conakry, London and Barcelona - all co-ordinated from its headquarters at Banjul Yundum International Airport. Operations to Lagos will start shortly. This signals a new beginning for aviation in West Africa, a region that is developing a dynamic business infrastructure alongside expanding tourism and five star leisure facilities, and whose populations are demanding improved access to international flight connections.

Connecting with the warmth of the Gambian spirit is crucial to the airline's personality. As the launch programme develops it will be the unique balance of a sincere and caring welcome on board, combined with the reassuring knowledge that the aircraft will get passengers to their destinations safely and on time, that will be the differentiating factor.

Karsten Balke, Chief Commercial Officer, explains the company's vision: "The origins of Gambia Bird stem from leveraging our business model which is founded in highly successful charter operations, to create a scheduled airline. We utilise a lean structure that outsources specialist support functions, such as technical and engineering, to expert providers and this enables us to get on with what we do best - running an airline. Market intelligence told us that economically the West African region is poised to grow at a phenomenal rate over the coming years and, whilst we acknowledge there are significant challenges within the region's infrastructure to overcome, it is these very challenges that provide the springboard for a successful airline.

"We are not offering a low-cost airline. Our aim is to build a reputation for quality and reliability via our scheduled and punctual services with a choice of affordable ticket options. Importantly, we want to build an airline that embodies the wonderful warmth of the Gambian people, for at the end of the day it is that total exceptional experience that will make people want to fly with us again and again."

A second A319-100 will come into operation in December extending Gambia Bird's reach and frequency throughout West Africa and further into Europe.

Gambia Bird has the full support of the Government of The Gambia and works closely with the Gambian Tourist Authorities. Visit the website www.gambiabird.com to find out more about the network and local sales agents' details.
