Siemens to install baggage handling system at Guatemala La Aurora International Airport

Analysis

Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group received an

order from International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), on behalf of Dirección

General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC) of Guatemala, to install an automated

turnkey baggage handling system (BHS) and hold baggage screening with five security

levels at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. The total order

volume is approximately EUR5 million. The project is scheduled for completion

by the end of Sep-07.

La Aurora International Airport is located South of Guatemala City, and is the only airport in Guatemala with international connections. The Siemens contract is part of the Nueva Aurora project, which includes the redesign, expansion and overall modernization of the airport in infrastructure and services, increasing the surface of the terminal from 26,000 to 47,000 sqm, with the number of boarding gates to be increased from seven to 18. After the completion of this expansion project, the airport is to be upgraded to category one by the United States FAA (Federal Aviation Agency) and the ICAO. Among other items, this also involves the increase of the capacity of the baggage logistics.

The baggage logistics will be expanded to meet the predicted airport demand until the year 2025 - with general airport modernization for passenger departures, arrivals and transfers. To achieve this, Siemens will be installing a baggage handling system with 100% X-ray screening of checked-in baggage and a throughput of up to 2000 bags per hour.

The new baggage handling system from Siemens I&S includes the check-in area, conveyor belts, make-up for loading, incoming baggage carousels, and the integration of hold baggage screening. The five-stage security system incorporates explosives detection by X-ray, computer-aided tomography, search workstations, and manual inspection. The contract also includes an integrated software solution for monitoring, controlling, and logging all system activities. The entire system complies with the standards and requirements of the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Currently, Siemens is attending the design, installation, project coordination, commissioning, and personnel training, and also a post-acceptance system support for six months and maintenance of the system for two years.
