Philippine Airlines stands by plan to spin-off functions

Analysis

Philippine Airlines President and COO, Jaime Bautista, has reiterated the airline's plans to spin-off non-core units, such as catering, call centre and ground handling functions as part of a restructuring plan.

Mr Bautista told the National Labor Relations Commission that the carrier would stand by its plans to exclude the spin-offs from talks for with unions for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). According to an abs-cbnNEWS.com report, Mr Bautista said the restructure has already secured approval from the Labor Department and it is "non-negotiable and therefore cannot be part of a new CBA that the union wants". The move will result in the the early retirement of some 2600 airline workers.
