Analysis

Latest traffic data for Jun-2009 from South Korea's main international gateway (and a key North Asian hub), Incheon International Airport, shows a weak recovery in cargo volumes continued last month (down 11.0% year-on-year to 222,953 tonnes), but passenger numbers continued to deteriorate, falling 15.3% year-on-year to 2.1 million.

The swine flu outbreak had an impact in its core markets to/from Japan, but volumes have been down by 14-15% year-on-year at Incheon in six of the past eight months.

Aircraft movements fell 8.8% year-on-year to 15,839. The traffic picture in North Asia will become clearer over the coming days as figures for Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo and Hong Kong are released.
