London (SITA) - SITA announced that it is taking over the IT and communications management at one of the world’s most important hubs for business travelers, London City Airport, as the airport gears up to meet growing demand from the City of London and takes steps to prepare for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Richard Gooding, London City Airport Managing Director, said: “This IT outsourcing deal will be a key enabler for London City Airport to deliver on our master plan for growth which forecasts eight million passengers per annum and increased employment from 1,500 to over 4,000 by 2030. SITA is an ideal partner to ensure the right IT environment to help make that happen.”
In addition to taking over all IT operations at the airport, SITA will work with the airport management to develop business opportunities matching SITA’s IT capability with London City Airport’s expertise and customer relationships.
This is the second significant outsourcing contract won by SITA, the world’s leading provider of IT applications to airports, since it first started to promote these services last year. In August last year SITA announced a ten-year IT outsourcing deal at Dusseldorf Airport, the first of its kind in Europe.
Francesco Violante, CEO designate of SITA, said: “We believe that this agreement with London City Airport is further evidence of an industry trend as airports realize the benefits of outsourcing with SITA in terms of career opportunities for their IT staff, access to innovative technology and a critical mass of expertise such as can only be provided by a global IT company focused solely on air transport.”
London City Airport is the only airport in London, six miles from the City of London financial district, and two miles from Canary Wharf, London’s latest business district. The airport will also be a major point of arrival and departure for athletes, officials and spectators attending the 2012 Olympic Games with the Olympic Village located just 10 minutes away by DLR train link.
In 2005, over two million passengers traveled through the London City Airport terminal. Passenger traffic is growing at 14% annually. London City Airport serves the niche business travel market through 15 airlines flying to 27 destinations.
