Kuala Lumpur International Airport promotes environmental efforts with "Project Green Planet"

Analysis

Kuala Lumpur International Airports promotes environmental efforts with the launch of "Project Green Planet". Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) launched (05-Jun-07) its Project Green Planet (PGP), in conjunction with World Environment Day. PGP's objective is to showcase KLIA's commitment to promote environmental responsibility to airport users and ultimately the global audience.

KLIA's PGP was launched by YB Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, Deputy Minister of Transport, accompanied by Tan Sri Datuk Dr Aris Othman, Chairman of Malaysia Airports and Dato' Seri Bashir Ahmad, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports.

Dato' Seri Bashir Ahmad said: "Malaysia Airports aims to lead the way in the aviation world in stimulating an environment conscious society, and we are proud to acknowledge that currently, KLIA is the only airport in the world to be certified by Green Globe for our eco-friendly efforts. PGP underlines Malaysia Airports corporate social responsibility initiatives which subscribe to KLIA's policy of Environmental and Social Sustainability."

To ensure continuity and sustainability of PGP, Malaysia Airports has drawn an array of environmental related programs, such as environmental exhibition, pledge a plant campaign, environmental guide book for travellers, snap green contest and also talks on the environment which will run until end of 2007. However, more environmental related programs are in the pipeline as Malaysia Airports considers this project as a long-term effort towards a better tomorrow.

PGP also collaborates with Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA), United Nation Environment Programmes (UNEP), Association of Earth (a Japanese non-profit organisation) and Canon. "We believe our partners will help us in achieving a successful environmental campaign. I am confident that this campaign will be adopted not only by the community in KLIA but also Malaysia on whole", added Dato' Seri Bashir Ahmad.

Meanwhile, KLIA was awarded Green Globe 21 Certification for the third year running. KLIA was first certified in 2004 and was the first and only airport in the world to attain the status of Green Globe certified. Green Globe is the global Benchmarking, Certification and improvement system for sustainable travel and tourism. It is based on Agenda 21 and Principles of Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio de Janeiro earth Summit. It provides companies and communities with a path to sustainable travel and tourism.
