Hong Kong International Airport breaks flight movement record

Analysis

HONG KONG (Airport Authority Hong Kong) - For two months in a row, another new record for flight movements at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has been set.

Aircraft movements in August reached 22,915, up 11.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. Cargo flights surged by 20.2 per cent during the month and passenger flights grew 10.3 per cent.

Strong export demands to Europe and North America continued to be the major driving force for the robust performance in air cargo tonnage. Cargo throughput in August reached 281,000 tonnes, a 10.4 per cent increase over the same month last year.

Passenger traffic rose by 7.2 per cent to 3,759,000, mainly driven by increased visitor traffic from Taiwan, South East Asia and Australasian markets. There were also growing demands for transfer services on routes between South East Asia and North America, Australasia and Europe, as well as South East Asia and Europe.

Passenger throughput for the past 12 months totaled 39,841,000. Over a rolling 12-month period, cargo tonnage and aircraft movements reached 3,299,000 and 252,815 respectively.
