HKIA's cargo throughput set another record in October

Analysis

HONG KONG (Airport Authority of Hong Kong) - Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled a record-high cargo throughput for the second consecutive month in October, despite a slowdown in international freight traffic growth.

A new daily record of 151 freight movements was set on October 21 as a result of the robust cargo throughput.

Boosted by strong inter/intra-region traffics, cargo throughput grew 6.9% year-on-year, amounting to 317,000 tonnes in October. This compared favourably with the international freight traffic growth rate which has slowed down according to the latest figures released by the Airport Council International (ACI).

Passenger number and aircraft movements continued to show healthy growth in October, up 6.5% and 12.2% over the corresponding month of last year respectively, to a total of 3,566,000 and 23,680. Aircraft movements, in particular, achieved an all-time high on a monthly basis.

Commercial Director of the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), Mr Hans Bakker, said, "The impressive performances in cargo throughtput reflect a continuing trend at HKIA, which is a result of Asia's buoyant economy, as well as the continuously strong demand for exports from the Mainland China."
