EU Council of Transport Ministers have unanimously approved

the EU-US 'open skies' agreement, effective Mar-08 (five months

later than originally proposed). The agreement is subject to US Senate approval

and individual EU States exercising suspension rights if no progress is made

after four years. The agreement is set to be signed during the EU-US Summit

on 30-Apr-07. EU Transport Commissioner, Jacques Barrot, forecast the deal would

boost trans-Atlantic services by 50% (from 50 million to 75 million) over five

years could trigger consolidation among European airlines.
