Hawaii airports get nearly $12 million for security, improvements

Analysis

Honolulu (AP) - Hawaii is getting six (m) million dollars

in federal funds to boost security at its eight major airports.

Hilo International Airport will also receive nearly six (m) million dollars to update its ailing, 30-year old air conditioning system.

About three (m) million dollars will go toward improving security at Lihue, Hilo International, Kona International, Molokai, Lanai and Dillingham Airfield airports. Another nearly three (m) million dollars will focus on the state's busiest airports, Honolulu International and Kahului.

Part of the security plan is to implement a statewide I-D card access system for airport employees.

U-S Senator Daniel Inouye says the security money will help Hawaii's airports meet the Federal Aviation Administration's security requirements.
